Jim's Worst Nightmare

Jim's Worst Nightmare

This picture of the entrance way, minus the stair-rail, is named for my dad. The lack of railing is truly one of his worst nightmares. He's worked in the insurance industry for too long, and a worrier by nature, he can't help but see something like this and imagine me, or someone, falling "over the ledge."

I've waited to invite him over until a stair-rail is back in.  And I do think he'll love the bamboo floors, as well as the stainless steel rail, which will be going in soon:)

Bamboo Floors

Eat-in kitchen
I didn't do a great job capturing the bamboo floors in these photos. The one to the right is a picture of where the kitchen opens into the living area. I plan to put a glass, square table in the spot shown. Again, I like the idea of casual living and wanted an eat-in kitchen rather than a formal dining space. My plan is to make it attractive enough to entertain guests as well as casual enough for my husband's and my daily meals.

To the left are views of the main living space. The bamboo unifies the entire main floor, beginning in the small entrance way, through to the kitchen, main living area, hallway, and into the two back bedrooms.  The one bathroom on this floor was done in a darker bamboo, with the wood laid perpendicular to the bamboo of the hallway.  I love the effect of that contrast.

A Simple Kitchen

Kitchen's Going In

The kitchen cabs were installed sometime in September, followed by open shelving up top and white subway tile backsplash.  I've always loved the simple, rustic look of those casual, European kitchens whose pots and dishes are within easy reach and on display for all to see. This is a more modern, not-so-rustic interpretation of that. An open closet opposite the wall shown will act as additional pantry space. I'm hoping this gives me enough room.

Shelves and backsplash all lend a simplicity that may be too much- too simple that is. It does leave me feeling calm, though, and matches the simplicity of my Celiac diet.
